Sri Lanka VS India Test series statistics

India and Sri Lanka have played 12 bilateral series. These two were also involved in a tri series comprising of India, Sri Lanka and Pakistan in Asian Test Championship.
Of the 12 bilateral series, India has won six series, Sri Lanka three series and the remaining three series have ended in a draw. Asia Test championship was won by Pakistan.
Both these two teams have played 32 tests out of which India has won 13 tests, Sri Lanka has won 05 tests and 14 tests have ended draw.
Sri Lanka has posted 600 runs in an innings on four occasions. 952 for 6 declared at Col-RPS in Aug 97 is its highest team total against India. India has posed 600 plus runs on three occasions. Its 726 for 9 declared at Mumbai {BS} in Dec 2009 is its highest total.
Sri Lanka has been dismissed all out for a total of less than 150 runs on five occasions, while India has been dismissed for a total of less than 150 runs only once. Sri Lanka's 82 at Chandigarh in Nov 90 is its lowest total in a completed innings, while India's lowest total is 138 at Col-SSC in Jul 2008.
The series has witnessed six batsmen scoring 1000 runs. The batsmen who have accomplished the feat are - SR Tendulkar of India {1605}, DPMD Jayawardene of Sri Lanka {1534}, R Dravid of India {1413}, PA de Silva of Sri Lanka {1252}, M Azharuddin of India {1215} and SC Ganguly of India {1064}.
Sri Lankan batsmen have scored 35 hundreds. ST Jayasuriya's 340 at Col-RPS in Aug 97 is the highest individual score by a Sri Lankan batsman. Indian batsmen have scored 42 hundreds. V Sehwag's 293 at Mumbai-BS in Dec 2009 is the highest individual score by an Indian batsman.
ST Jayasuriya {340 at Col-RPS in Aug 97}, DPMD Jayawardene {275 at Ahmedabad in Nov 2009}, DPMD Jayawardene {242 at Col-SSC in Feb 99} and RS Mahanama {225 at Col-RPS in Aug 07} are the three Sri Lankan batsmen to score four double hundreds. ST Jayasuriya's 340 represent the highest individual innings by a Sri Lankan batsman.
ST Jayasuriya remains the only Sri Lankan batsman to score a triple hundred and also the only batsman in Sri Lanka-India test series. DPMD Jayawardene is the only Sri Lankan batsman to score double hundreds on two occasions.
V Sehwag is the only Indian batsman to score double hundreds on two occasions - 293 at Mumbai-BS in Dec 2009 and 201* at Galle in Jul 2008. While scoring 201 not out he earned the distinction of carrying the bat through the completed innings.
DPMD Jayawardene and PA de Silva share the record for most hundreds by a Sri Lankan batsman against India. Both the batsmen have scored five hundreds. SR Tendulkar has scored eight hundreds which is not only the Indian record for most hundreds against Sri Lanka but also a record in Sri Lanka-India test series.
It is interesting to note that there are no hundreds by Indian batsmen in a losing cause against Sri Lanka, while three hundreds by Sri Lankan batsmen have gone in vain against India. The three hundreds are - 104 by DPMD Jayawardene at Kandy in Aug 2001, 109 by TM Dilshan at Mumbai {BS} in Dec 2009 and 137 by KC Sangakkara at Mumbai {BS} in Dec 2009.
There are nine occasions of Indian captains scoring hundreds. Kapil Dev's 163 at Kanpur in Dec 1986 is the highest individual knock by an Indian captain. There are four occasion of Sri Lankan captains scoring hundreds against India. KC Sangakkara's 137 at Mumbai {BS} in Dec 2009 is the highest individual score by a Sri Lankan captain against India.
SAR Silva, KC Sangakkara and HAPW Jayawardene are the three Sri Lankan wicket keepers who have scored hundreds against India, while MS Dhoni is the lone Indian wicket keeper to score two hundreds against Sri Lanka.
Ishant Sharma of India and MS Atapattu of Sri Lanka share the record for most zeroes in India-Sri Lanka test series. Both the batsmen have failed to open the account in four innings.
DPMD Jayawardene of Sri Lanka, R Dravid of India and SR Tendulkar of India share the record for most fifties in India-Sri Lanka test series. They have scored 12 fifties each.
ST Jayasuriya of Sri Lanka with 571 runs in 1997 series remains the only batsman to aggregate 500 plus runs in India-Sri Lanka test series. He aggregated 571 runs from two tests and three innings.
M Muralidaran of Sri Lanka {97}, A Kumble of India {74} and Harabhajan Singh of India {50} are the three bowlers who have captured fifty plus wickets in India-Sri Lanka test series. M Muralidaran with his 97 wickets requires three more wickets for his 100 wickets against India.
M Muralidaran's 8 for 87 at Col-SSC in Aug 01 and Maninder Singh's 7 for 51 at Nagpur in Dec 86 are the best bowling figures in an innings by a Sri Lankan bowler and by an Indian bowler respectively in Sri Lanka and India test series.
There are 18 occasions of Sri Lankan bowler capturing five or more wickets in an innings against India. M Muralidaran holds the record of capturing five plus wickets on most occasions - five occasions.
There are 18 occasions of Indian bowler capturing five or more wickets in an innings against Sri Lanka. A Kumble holds the record of capturing five plus wickets on most occasions - four occasions.
There are three occasions of a Sri Lankan bowler capturing ten or more wickets against India which read thus - 11 for 110 by M Muralidaran at Col-SSC in Jul 08, 11 for 196 by M Muralidaran at Col-SSC in Aug 01 and 10 for 209 by BAW Mendis at Galle in Jul 08.
There are six occasions of Indian bowlers capturing ten or more wickets in a match which read thus - 11 for 125 by SLV Raju at Ahmedabad in Feb 94, 11 for 128 by A Kumble at Lucknow in Jan 94, 10 for 107 by Maninder Singh at Nagpur in Dec 86, 10 for 141 by Harbhajan Singh at Ahmedabad in Dec 05, 10 for 153 by Harbhajan Singh at Galle in Jul 08 and 10 for 157 by A Kumble at Delhi in Dec 05.
M Muralidaran's 11 for 110 at Col-SSC in Jul 08 and SLV Raju's 11 for 125 at Ahmedabad in Feb 94 are the best match bowling effort by a Sri Lankan bowler and an Indian bowler respectively in Sri Lanka-India test series.
There are 42 occasions of a Sri Lankan bowler conceding 100 plus runs in an innings against India. M Muralidaran has conceded 100 plus runs on 14 occasions - a record for Sri Lankan bowler against India.
There are 32 occasions of an Indian bowler conceding 100 plus runs in an innings against Sri Lanka. Harbhajan Singh has conceded 100 plus runs on seven occasions - a record for an Indian bowler against Sri Lanka.
UMBBCA Welegedera {none for 103 at Kanpur in Nov 09}, EAR de Silva {none for 114 at Cuttack in Jan 87}, KJ Silva {none for 122 at Col-RPS in Aug 97}, M Muralidaran {none for 124 at Ahmedabad in Nov 09}, EAR de Silva {none for 133 at Kanpur in Dec 86} and M Muralidaran {none for 137 at Nagpur in Nov 97} are the bowlers who have conceded 100 plus runs without capturing a wicket against India.
A Kumble {none for 121 at Col-SSC in Jul 08} and Zaheer Khan {none for 134 at Col-SSC in Aug 01} are the two Indian bowlers who have conceded 100 plus runs without capturing a wicket against Sri Lanka.
HMRKB Herath returned with figures of 53.3-2-240-3 at Mumbai {BS} in Dec 09 providing the most expensive bowling figures in terms of runs conceded by a Sri Lankan bowler against India.
RK Chauhan returned with figures of 78.0-8-276-3 at Col-RPS in Aug 97 providing the most expensive bowling figures in terms of runs conceded by an Indian bowler against Sri Lanka. Two other Indian bowlers A Kumble {72.0-7-223-1 at Col-RPS in Aug 97} and A Mishra {58.0-6-203-1 at Ahmedabad in Nov 09} have conceded 200 plus runs in an innings.
RK Chauhan and A Kumble conceded 276 and 223 runs in the same innings of the test at Col-RPS in Aug 97 providing the second occasion of two bowlers conceding 200 plus runs in the same test innings in the annals of test cricket. The first such occasion was witnessed at Kingston in Feb 58 in the test match between West Indies and Pakistan. Pakistan bowlers - Fazal Mahmood {247} and Khan Mohammad {259} conceded 200 plus runs.
M Azharuddin of India with 27 catches and HP Tilakaratne of Sri Lanka with 16 catches hold the record for most number of catches by a Sri Lankan fieldsman and by an Indian fieldsman respectively in Sri Lanka-India test series.
SAR Silva of Sri Lanka with 22 dismissals and NR Mongia of India with 18 dismissals hold the record for most dismissals by a Sri Lankan wicket keeper and by an Indian wicket keeper respectively in Sri Lanka-India test series. MS Dhoni with 16 dismissals to his credit is all set to rewrite the Indian record for most dismissals by an Indian wicket keeper during the ensuing test series.
Sri Lankan batsmen have posted thirty three figure partnerships against India. These forty three three figure partnerships include four partnerships of 200 plus runs partnerships. 576 runs for the second wicket between ST Jayasuriya and RS Mahanama at Col-RPS in Aug 97 represent the highest three figure partnership posted by Sri Lankan batsmen against India.
Indian batsmen have posted forty three three figure partnerships against Sri Lanka. These forty three three figure partnerships include eight partnerships of 200 plus runs partnerships. 272 runs for the sixth wicket between M Azharuddin and N Kapil Dev at Kanpur in Dec 96 represent the highest three figure partnership posted by Indian batsmen against Sri Lanka.
